How to puppy proof your home.

  • 2-11-2011

Closing Closet Doors

Making certain that your closet doors are firmly shut will ensure that your puppy doesn't take the opportunity to use your shoes, and any other contents you may have in your closet, as a chew toy. Puppies are also very prone to choking on shoe laces which can be a fatal hazard. If possible and practicable, use elastic wire to firmly shut your closet doors.

Protecting Your Electrical Cords

As we all know, electrical cords carry electricity which can be harmful to humans and puppies alike. Another way to puppy proof your home is to purchase cord covers. Cord covers slip over the electrical cord and prevent your puppy from gnawing through the electrical cord. In turn, this will reduce the risk of you puppy becoming electrocuted.

Guarding the Trash Can

Puppies love the smell of food and other waste found in your trash can, and no matter how hard you try, puppies still love getting into the trash and making a mess! One security measure to take is to always have the lid on your trash can tightly closed. For extra protection, you might consider putting up a child-proof gate in front the trash can so your puppy has less opportunity to meddle in the garbage.

In the Bathroom

Depending on the type of breed of dog you have, you will want to keep the lid to your toilet closed at all times. This prevents the puppy from not only drinking contaminated or possibly chlorinated water, but it also prevents small puppies from drowning. Additionally, securing any bathroom cabinets within the puppy's reach is also a good idea so the puppy does not accidentally get into any cleaning or poisonous products.

Other Methods to Puppy Proof Your Home

Puppy proofing your home isn't limited to securing closet doors and keeping the lid on the trash can. Ensuring that your furry friend is safe from other hazard is also important. One tip is not to allow your puppy to eat chicken bones. Because bits and pieces of the chicken bone are small, they may become lodged in the puppy's throat, causing them to choke.

Also, don't feed your puppies chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine which causes serious health problems within many animals. It's like given your pup a steroid shoot; it may not kill him today, but the damage is irreversible.

Remember, puppy proofing your home is a job within itself, and should not be taken for granite. Transforming your puppy's new home into a secure place to live will ensure that both you and your puppy have a long, loving, and lasting relationship.
